The Graun brothers are among the main representatives of Berlin classic. Born in the small town of Wahrenbrück in the Elbe-Elster district, Carl Heinrich Graun became court conductor in the chapel of the Prussian King Friedrich II. His brother Johann Gottlieb Graun was concertmaster and chamber musician at the same court with a focus on the strings of the royal opera orchestra. August Friedrich, the third of the Graun brothers, worked as cathedral cantor in Merseburg.
Maintaining the Graun heritage has a long tradition in the Elbe-Elster region. The district music school with its locations in Herzberg, Elsterwerda and Finsterwalde is called "Gebrüder Graun" and since 2010 the Graun Society around its chairman, the Wahrenbrück pastor Michael Seifert, is actively involved in rediscovering the Graun heritage. The highlights of Graun care are the international competitions for the Graun Brothers Prize, which have been taking place regularly since 2001.
